7 Ways Your Church Can Use Twitter

7 Ways Your Church Can Use Twitter

By Wisdom Moon on October 04, 2012

Wondering whether or not it’s worth it for your church to have a Twitter account?

Not sure how to best utilize Twitter as a church?

Here are 7 simple and easy ways you can start using Twitter right now!

1. Share church news
Is there a mid-week gathering tomorrow? Tweet about it and let people know what time and what they can expect. Do you have an outreach event schedule for next week? Tweet it with a link to your church calendar for more info!

2. Follow people
If you don’t follow anyone on Twitter and no one follows you, it’s kinda lame. Twitter is way more fun (and worthwhile) when you have followers and you also follow people. If you’re not sure where to begin, try Twitter’s search engine or better yet, try their Advance Search option.

You can find people in your area to follow and interact with. Obviously, you should try to follow your church members. One thing you don’t want to do is follow 2,000 people when you only have 50 followers. It makes you look like a possible spammer.

3. Ask people to tweet or DM (Direct Message) you any prayer needs
You can do this everyday or once a week. Then, take those prayer requests to your pastoral team or prayer team and pray for each one. Wow! How powerful is that!

4. Show it on the big screen
This one may be a bit of a leap for some churches, but consider showing a live feed of tweets on the big screen at church pre-service (in the sanctuary, lobby, and/or coffeeshop if you have one). This may be a fun thing to do, especially for youth groups.

People love seeing their picture and name (and what they tweeted) on the big screen. You can utilize a tool like this one by Hootsuite to show live tweets, with the keyword(s) you specify. For example, during our retreats in the past, we’ve showed a live feed of tweets that contained a hashtag, like #aawr. People really got into it and enjoyed it.

5. Tweet your live stream
If you live stream your worship service, tweet it before and during the live streaming of the service. A great way to reach people who may never otherwise step foot in a church building!

6. Reach out to the hurting
It might be a good idea to have multiple tech-savvy people help monitor and manage your Twitter account and set a schedule of when each person will be “on-duty”. Have that person while they are on-duty see what people are tweeting.

Twitter is not just a place where you can tell the whole world about what you’re having for lunch. It is a mission field. Find and reach out to the hurting. You’ll be surprised how openly people share about their pain and needs. Take the opportunity to minister to them.

7. Find resources
Lastly, Twitter is a great place to find resources that you may need…like All About Worship! : )
In need of a new sound board? Ask people on Twitter for suggestions. Not sure what the best presentation software is to invest in? Ask on Twitter! In fact, I’ve even seen churches find new staff members using Twitter.

These are just 7 of the countless ways your church can utilize this tool called, Twitter. Feel free to share your ideas below in the comments, or ask any questions you may have!
