Asking The Wrong Questions About Church Growth

Asking The Wrong Questions About Church Growth

By Wisdom Moon on May 20, 2014

“How long would you sit in a theater if the screen didn't light up?
Do you line up for gas where the station’s fuel tanks are empty?
Eventually everyone vacates church where God is not obviously present and working.”
-James McDonald (from the book Vertical Church)

Wow! Such a true statement. I’m just a few pages into this book, but it is already resonating with me big time! If you haven’t yet, I encourage you to check out James McDonald’s book: Vertical Church.

Just the few pages I've read so far have inspired me to write down some of my thoughts in this post...

In some ways, church has become so complicated, especially for church leaders. Are we going to be a purpose-driven church? A seeker-sensitive church? A bible church? A community church? A relevant church? A traditional church? A hipster church?

Which megachurch are we going to model after? Which church model will be most successful for our community? Which church growth expert should we hire?

We can find ourselves asking the wrong questions as church leaders. It is easy to do when we feel the pressure to keep the big tithers happy and when we are operating out of fear of losing people or our job.

My hope and prayer for my church and yours is that God is present...He reveals His glory and that we seek His face and His will. I don’t want to be a part of a church that seeks out a magic formula for church growth.

I want to be a part of a church that seeks His face. I want to be a part of a church family that is not content with just going through the Sunday rituals. I want to be a part of a church where visitors enter the building and can sense the presence of God so thick that they are drawn to Him, not to a flashy production or a seeker-sensitive, non-offensive, feel-good message.

Let’s seek HIM! If God is in it, nothing can stop it!
