Bethel Music - You Make Me Brave [Review]

By Glenn Stout on April 22, 2014

Following the success of Tides and Tides Live, Bethel Music releases the live compilation, You Make Me Brave, on April 22. The live album attempts to capture the worship experience during a three-day women’s conference held in Redding, CA. It features songs that were written independently and later led at the conference by a talented team of worship leaders, including Jenn Johnson, Kari Jobe, and Kristene DiMarco among others. This album was born at a women’s conference but carries a message for the whole church.

That message is evident from the title track on the album, “You Make Me Brave.”  Written and performed by Amanda Cook, the song is a personal reflection of how God has moved in her life.  Although most everyone struggles with fear at some point, God calls us to overcome the fear through bravery.  “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV)  The song is an eloquent reminder of that message and the realization that it is God that makes us brave.

Kari Jobe performs an extended version of her newest hit, “Forever” on this album as well. This moving and powerful song from Kari’s new album, Majestic, chronicles the emotions of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection. However, as captured in the live environment of the conference, this nearly 12 minute extended version of the song is simply majestic and ushers you into the throne to worship God. The song is a confident declaration of death’s defeat. The tumult and victory move the listener to bravely declare: “We sing hallelujah! The Lamb has overcome!”

Another standout song on the album is Kristene DiMarco’s “It Is Well.” Kristene echos the theme of bravery as the song describes trials and challenges that we face in life.  She declares confidently in the song that, “through it all my eyes are on You, through it all it is well with me.” The song builds into a crescendo with the chorus of the classic hymn, “It is well with my soul.”

The rest of the songs found on the album bring a common message that God is present, forever standing for you, and eternally loving you in order to give you strength and to make you brave. The accompanying DVD further defines these messages and provides vibrant visuals to inspire the worship experience. Although the songs are deeply personal and powerful on their own, this live album captures the beauty of the corporate worship experience of the conference and makes this a must have for your worship collection.
