What copyright issues should our church be concerned about as we plan our Christmas production?

Here are some key issues you’ll need to keep in mind as you seek to share the joy of Christmas with your congregations and communities, and our ideas on how to make sure your church productions are copyright compliant.

It’s important to understand and fully utilize church copyright blanket licenses.

A Performance Facilities and Event License is necessary for most Christmas programs. The CopyrightSolverPERFORMmusic license is the only one-stop Church Performance License available in the U.S. and covers 16 million songs from the catalogs of ASCAP, BMI and SESAC.

If you want to webcast or stream your program online, you’ll need a Music Internet Performance License. CCLI’s Streaming License covers 200,000 Christian songs, and the CopyrightSolverWORSHIPcast License covers 16 million songs, including Christian and secular seasonal songs.

For more information on blanket licenses, go to:http://www.copyrightsolver.com/docs/factsheets/FactSheet-ChurchBlanketLicenses.pdf

Recording requires additional licensing.

If you plan to record your program (audio or video), obtain Mechanical and Synchronization Licenses for all copyrighted music and sound recordings. You can obtain these licenses on your own or through CopyrightSolver’s online PERMISSIONSplus Service.

Don’t assume all Christmas songs are in the public domain.

Many Christmas songs are copyrighted and owned by secular companies and require permission. For a list of secular Christmas songs, go to:http://www.copyrightsolver.com/docs/factsheets/FactSheet-SecularChristmasSongs.pdf

Get the proper participant consent.

Be sure to get signed consent and release forms from any participants (staff or volunteers) who will appear in your production. This is especially important for any children or minors.
