He is Jealous for Me [Devotion]

He is Jealous for Me [Devotion]

By Wisdom Moon on August 18, 2013

The song "How He Loves" by John Mark McMillan starts off with the words: “He is jealous for me."

It’s hard for me as an imperfect human being to understand and grasp what it means for God, the Creator of the universe to be jealous for me. Why is He jealous for my love? The best way I can relate to it is through being a father to my 3 kids.

As a dad, I love giving gifts to my kids, buying stuff for them. I love seeing them excited and enjoying the stuff they have. However, sometimes kids can get so excited about something they have, like a new video game they’ve been begging for, that they get completely absorbed with it.

I remember a time when I came home from working all day and I didn't know where my kids were. I eventually found them and they were so focused on playing with something I had gotten them that they didn't even realize I came home...they didn't even notice me walk into the room. They were so distracted by the thing I gave them to express my love to them, that they didn't even realize that their daddy who got them that thing was in the room! I felt a righteous jealousy. I was jealous for their attention and affection as their father, as the one that is crazy about them and couldn't wait to come home to see them!

I wonder if that is how God feels when we get so distracted by the things of this world or even things that He has given us, that we don’t even recognize when we have slowly drifted away from Him. I wonder how He feels when we seek His hands more than His face. I wonder if He feels a righteous jealousy for our attention and affection because He is so passionately in love with us that He will not take second place.

I encourage you to take a moment right now to ask the Lord to reveal to you anyone or anything that you have allowed to steal the affection and attention that God alone deserves.

Lord, thank You that You are crazy about us, as our Heavenly Father. Thank You that Your love is unconditional. You chase after us! And You are so patient with us. Forgive us for allowing anything or anyone to steal our attention and affection that belong solely to You. Forgive us for seeking Your hand more than Your face. Draw us close to You.
