Hillsong Young & Free - This Is Living [Review]

By Barry Westman on February 03, 2015

This Is Living is the latest release from Hillsong Young & Free, the creative worship expression of Hillsong Church’s current youth ministry. Following their debut release in 2013, this sophomore EP contains 5 tracks, including 3 new songs. The popularity of this group is certainly on the rise, capturing the youth culture by storm with their fresh, energetic sound.

The opening title track, “This Is Living,” is an energy-filled, techno-dance, driving song, featuring a collaboration with award-winning rap artist Lecrae. The second track’s title, “Energy,” could be the word to describe this whole EP. Another high-energy electronic dance tune, this song has a distinct pop sound, and sounds like it could easily be heard on the radio today. The final new song, “Pursue,” brings the tempo down, but not the intensity, with this song that challenges the listener to pursue God wholeheartedly.

The EP also includes an acoustic stripped down version of the title track (without Lecrae). This version sounds completely different than the original, and is another standout track all on its own. Finally, there is an acoustic remake of a song from Y&F’s first album, “Sinking Deep.”

Hillsong Y&F has certainly developed a sound that is truly contemporary, and based on the success of their first album, it is clear that this group is reaching its target audience. The question is, will these songs be embraced by the church at large? On a personal note, I asked my 17-year old son what he thought of this album, and he loved it. He was quite astonished, though, when I suggested doing the opening song on a Sunday morning. He couldn’t quite picture his dad pulling that one off.

These songs appeal to all ages, the young in age and the young at heart. Y&F’s prayer for these songs is that they, “Might provide an entry point whereby hearts awaken to the light of Christ, captives are set free, and the name of Jesus is made known.”
