Jenn Petersen “Sobriquet” - CD Review & Free Song
Jenn Petersen is no newbie when it comes to songwriting or recording an album. In fact, she has six CD projects under her belt.It is because of her continuous desire to learn that her songwriting ability and music career have continued to evolve organically and reach people for over a decade.
When she isn’t finding a way to use her “word of the day” in casual conversation, Jenn utilizes her time to bring awareness to the issue of human trafficking both locally and internationally. After traveling to Cambodia in 2010, Jenn has continued to participate in fundraisers and local events to bring an end to this horrendous activity. Jenn also volunteers at her kids’ school and helps them with homework, often playing the role of the overzealous type-A mom.
Her latest album Sobriquet is a great reflection of her life and her personal relationship with Jesus. The album opens with a catchy tune called “Just The Kind of God”, which I would have to say is one of my favorites on the album. The opening verse starts with: “I have this curiosity about You.The kind that won’t let me look away.” The chorus is one that is very memorable: “You did the most unthinkable thing. You came to me just to set me free...”
Another standout is the title track, “Sobriquet”. What is a sobriquet, you ask? That must have been one of Jenn’s “words of the day” – at least it would have been for me! I had to look it up in the dictionary to learn that a sobriquet is a “nickname”. This is a poignant and beautiful song about how even in the midst of all the lies of Satan, doubt, discouragement and tears that may come in this life, we can have confidence and strength because our Father loves us, and because “I am a child of the Father, that’s my sobriquet.”
Jenn’s piano, vocal and guitar skills are masterfully displayed on this project, which includes several amazing songs, including a duet with Evan Wickham, entitled “Hope Remains”, another standout track that highlights this recurring theme of hope on this album. The vocals here are solid, with a variety of instrumentation in this group of songs.
This CD from this rising female solo artist would be a great addition to your personal listening playlist. You can purchase Jenn’s CD on iTunes and on her website .
