Jesus Culture - Unstoppable Love [Review]
Unstoppable Love is Jesus Culture’s newest album release. Released on June 3rd, and following the best-selling, critically acclaimed Jesus Culture With Martin Smith: Live From New York, it is the 10th album from the Jesus Culture band and ministry. It was recorded live at the historic Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento, CA during Jesus Culture’s annual Encounter Conference in January 2014.
In speaking about this album, Jesus Culture director Banning Leibscher, says “Our prayer for this album is that you would encounter the unstoppable, over-the-top, zealous, extravagant love that God has for you.” After listening to this album multiple times, I can say with confidence that Banning’s prayer will be answered.
I am a big admirer of Jesus Culture’s music and their approach to leading worship. I’m pretty confident they could play and sing the phone book and somehow lead me to the throne! I have yet to be disappointed with a Jesus Culture album, or song for that matter, and I am pleased that this album is no exception.
While I love all the tracks on the record, there are a few that stand out to me.
Here they are:
“Light of the World” features Chris Quilala on vocals. It is a great song that speaks of Jesus as the One who left His throne and incarnated into human flesh to walk amongst humankind. Through His life, death and resurrection, He is the light of the world through whom darkness has been defeated. This song features solid instrumental arrangement and during the softer parts of the song a cello provides a nice textural layer.
“Unstoppable Love” is the title track, and is one of the best songs on the album. Kim Walker-Smith takes the lead vocal reins on this song. It opens softly with just Kim’s vocals, synth keyboard, and piano. The rest of the band begins to join in during verse two, and the song crescendos dynamically in the bridge.
The lyrical content of this song is strong with lines like “You have come running, You tore down every wall; All the while shouting ‘my love, you’re worth it all’,” and from the chorus, “God, you pursue me, with power and glory; Unstoppable love that never ends; You’re unrelenting, with passion and mercy, Unstoppable love that never ends.” This song beautifully captures the heart of God to relentlessly pursue people so that He may have a relationship with them.
“Your Name Is Glorious” is another standout track. Kim serves as lead vocalist on this song as well. The song does a great job of helping the worshiper highly elevate the glorious name of God. In the chorus it is sung “Your Name is glorious, we lift You up higher, higher; Come see what God has done, and lift Him up higher, higher.” It seems to echo Psalm 66:1-2a “Shout joyful praises to God, all the earth! Sing about the glory of his name!”, and verse 5a “Come and see what our God has done…” (NLT).
“10,000 Reasons” is the final track on the album. You might have heard of this song already. I think it might be sung in a couple churches here and there! Ha! Ok.. probably every church in existence that has access to modern worship music! All kidding aside, we all know how great and amazing this song is and Jesus Culture does a great job covering this song, as usual. Kim’s vocals shine and more great instrumental arrangement is featured.
Unstoppable Love continues the Jesus Culture tradition of music that emphatically and passionately moves the worshiper deep into authentic worship of God. There are several songs like the ones highlighted above that could easily be done in a congregational setting. I highly recommend you get your paws on this album, and as Banning Leibscher was quoted as saying above, “encounter the unstoppable, over-the-top, zealous, extravagant love that God has for you!”
