Martin Smith - Back to The Start [Review]
Martin Smith is back! The former front man of Delirious returns with a new solo project appropriately entitled, Back To The Start. Martin and his band mates of Delirious were responsible for hits such as “I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever,” “Did You Feel The Mountains Tremble,” “Majesty,” “Shout To The North,” and many other modern worship classics. Martin now brings that same passion to these new worship anthems found on this album.
“Great Is Your Faithfulness” seems like it would fit nicely into a lot of Sunday set lists. It starts out with a slower acoustic vibe, before opening up with full on guitars and drums. “From age to age you never change, great is your faithfulness…Great is your love for us!” This song and these lyrics are begging for a live performance to fully appreciate the power of the song.
Another song that plays well to a live crowd is “Fire Never Sleeps,” which is chock full of drums and guitar riffs that almost remind one of U2. The song moves along up to the bridge when the tempo unexpectedly changes completely, before picking back up in an impressive instrumental measure before one last chorus. This song was also included on the Jesus Culture album, Live from New York (with Martin Smith).
“Waiting Here For You” was also captured live on that same Jesus Culture album. The studio version included on this latest release, features Sarah Bird. All in all, an excellent version of the Christy Nockels hit.
Another remake of a well known song is “God’s Great Dance Floor,” which Martin co-wrote with Chris Tomlin. The new album also includes songs that Martin co-wrote with Michael W. Smith, Matt Redman, Gareth Gilkeson & Chris Llewellyn from Rend Collective, Tim Hughes and Reuban Morgan.
I have to admit that I wasn't overly fond of this album the first time I listened to it, but as I listened to it a second, third and fourth time, the powerful lyrics and depth of the music grew on me and I found myself singing the songs even when the music wasn't playing. Back To The Start is a passionate worship album that I highly recommend.
