North Koreans Executed for Possessing The Bible

North Koreans Executed for Possessing The Bible

By Wisdom Moon on November 19, 2013

On November 3rd, North Korea publicly executed 80 people throughout their country. If you haven’t heard the news, you can read it here.

For many that were put to death, it was the simple crime of possessing The Bible. In one city, it is reported that 10,000 people (including children) were forced to gather in a stadium and watch the executions. Witnesses say that it was so brutal that the victims couldn’t be recognized afterwards.

Just stop...pause...and think about that. Let it settle...

People getting murdered by their own government because they had The Bible. The Bible that so many of us in the western world take for granted. The Bible that so many of us are too busy to read everyday. The Bible that we can get access to within seconds as a free app on our smartphones, and walk around with in our pocket all day. The Bible that so many of us Christians and denominations fight and argue over interpretations on.

As someone that was born in South Korea, this news hit me pretty hard. My heart has been heavy. When I found out about it, I posted it on my Facebook and got some comments, one of which was a lady (who I don’t know) that stated, “Don’t you realize where they are now!? They are in a better place! You should be happy for them!”

Yes, I do know where they are now, but really? I should be happy for those followers of Christ that were executed? I should be happy for their families who had to watch their loved ones get killed by machine guns? (Needless to say, I deleted her comment.)

Oh, how far we are from the heart of God!

We, in the western society, have no idea what real persecution is. It grieves me to see someone respond that way about other believers getting killed for their faith.

Lord, may we never take Your Word, The Bible, for granted. May we never be too busy to stop and read, and meditate on it. May we not forsake interceding for our brothers and sisters around the world who are facing real persecution for their faith.
