Read It Before You Sing It
There are new worship songs and worship albums releasing left and right these days! I think that’s awesome!
It is easier than ever now to find a well-produced worship album. With Christian radio saturated with worship music, and the ability to instantly stream worship songs via iTunes, Spotify, and the like, our problem isn’t finding worship songs, it is sifting through all the songs to find the gems.
Here is my warning to all of us worship leaders/pastors: don’t get so mesmerized by the production that you pick a song based on the production, a cool guitar riff, or the artist and not pay close attention to the lyrics. We, as the the ones responsible for choosing the songs that our congregations sing, must look past the top-notch production that nicely packages the song.
When you’re choosing the songs, Read It Before You Sing It!
Through music, we are instilling theology into the hearts of our people. Do your homework and read the lyrics of the song you’re considering BEFORE you introduce the song to your church on a Sunday morning.
It is so easy to get excited about a certain song because our favorite songwriter wrote it or our favorite artist sang it, or because we heard it on KLOVE! Just because your favorite worship band released a new album with 10 new worship songs on it, does not mean it is safe to just introduce any of those songs to your church. Just because the Christian radio station plays it 20 times a day, does not mean it is biblically accurate.
Be the gatekeeper for your congregation. Take the time to read through the lyrics to make sure you agree with them, and most importantly, to make sure it aligns with the Word of God, The Bible!
Yes, when you examine a song, READ the lyrics, don’t just sing them. Reading them allows us to really zero in on the words and not get distracted by the melody.
