The Amazing Race (Devotion)
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart." - Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV)
"The race set before us"
This passage is chalk full of imagery. I just love the picture of the "race marked out for us". How freeing it would be for us to "throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles us", and keep our eyes on Jesus. How often do we run looking at our feet?
It would require a faith in Christ and a solid relationship with Christ to stop relying on our own judgement, and trust in the all-knowing, all-powerful God. In reading and meditating on this, I was encouraged to read that we are running towards a goal, a purpose selected specifically for each of us. There is absolutely no question about that. Even though we are most often not sure of where we're going or how we're getting there, it is our challenge to allow Him to be a "light unto our path" ( Ps. 119:105).
It then discusses the grand sacrifice that Christ made for our sins. This section of the text reminds me that even my lowest of days or seasons cannot even compare to what Christ went through. It also reminds me that I have hope in Jesus Christ no matter what is happening in my life. No matter how far or long I have to run, I must always remember that grand sacrifice so that I will never "grow weary and lose heart".
The question is this: are we running His race, or creating our own?
